Is it okay to have a white Toto in the Wizard of Oz?

My junior high drama club is putting on a small production of the Wizard of Oz. W are thinking of using a real dog, and the only option is either a white real one or a stuffed black one. Would it be too unlike the movie? Or doesn't it matter? Personally, I think it would be adorable if we used a real dog. Thanks!|||I know that when I did Wizard of Oz we were fortunate enough to have a brown dog that looked kind of black with the correct lighting. But I think that you should defiantly use a real dog for multiple reasons.

1. You aren't copying the movie exactly. Even if you use the same script, your costumes, actors, and sets will be different so you may as well make it your own. This doesn't mean you should completely disregard the movie, for they did a wonderful job and serve as a wonderful template. But you should distinguish yourself from the movie, and a white toto may be just the way to do it.

2. The audience (particularly the little ones) will be so happy to see a live dog and get to pet it after wards etc. that they won't care if it is black, white, or purple!

However, you must realize that using a real dog also has it's limitations. For example, we couldn't for the life of us get our toto into the witches basket. So you may have to make adjustments, but I believe that the rewards are worth it.

HAVE A TON OF FUN!! THIS IS SUCH A WONDERFUL SHOW!|||A real dog would be great - if it did not use the stage for a place to go # 1 or # 2 and was trained to deal with the crowds, noise etc|||White Totos are preferred by 9 out of 10 flying monkeys.

Using a live dog will add a lot to your show, but you'll have to keep the pooch under control somehow, e.g., Dorothy might have to carry the dog most/all of the time.|||Yes, a real dog, not matter what the color, and for that matter what the size is would be much better than a stuffed one.

However, you best make sure the dog can handle crowds, won't attack the audience, will be quiet and not bark at everyone it sees, and so forth and so on.

Personally, I think it would be a real kick to use like a Great Dane or a St. Bernard. It would give a whole new meaning to the line "...and I'll get your little dog too!!"|||lol yes it's fine. if you have a real dog, using a stuffed one would just be lame. it doesn't have to look just like the movie, you can be creative with the production and do things however you would like. you're not replicating the movie, you're performing the stage version of Wizard of Oz. They just so happened to use a black (was he black or dark brown?) dog in the movie, that doesn't at all mean it has to be that way. white toto is fine.
