How come my electric guitar cant sound like the one in toto-hold the line?

Is it becasue of my amp? I've had this guitar and now im begining to teach myself how to play, and when i go on youtube and teach myself, my guitar never sounds like what there playin. I know im playing the right notes too.|||it needs to be tuned to the right pitch|||the biggest thing that decides sound is the pick-ups. if your pickups are crap then nothing will help. the only way you could have good pickups that came in your guitar is if the guitar is a premium grade like a gibson les paul, american strat or something else in that range.

these is easily solved by buying after market pickups....check out dimarzio, seymour duncan and emg pickups online.

from there i think that song is going to have a clean distortion and a bit of delay or echo. it's also more than one guitar track (at the end of the solo). it possibly can be simulated with an octaver.

the guitar sounds a bit like a hollow body but I was sure the guy played les paul...hmmm. I'd bet an epiphone arch top dot could hit it right off the bat.

if thats the sound you dig i'd go with the dot and some dimarzios.

a tube screamer wouldn't hurt.|||One of my all-time favorite songs done by a great guitarist (Steve Lukather).

First...if you had an exact duplicate of the rig Steve used to record that song, the same guitar, strings, nail polish, etc., you would still not sound exactly the same.

It's more than just playing the same notes...it's in the attack, phrasing, vibrato, and more. In other words, a lot of the sound comes from your fingers!

Since you didn't say what kind of amp and guitar you have, it's pointless to try to come up with any settings. Just keep in mind that this song was cut long before high gain amps were common. There's not a lot of distortion on that track, just an amp turned up to get some saturation going and some delay.

Good luck.
