|||ANSWER:
The exact date of Toto's death is not known. Some say that Toto died of heart worm in 1942, 1943, or 1944. I suspect that she (not he) died in 1944.
MORE INFORMATION:
The female Cairn terrier's name was originally "Terry III," but it was changed, at the age of 5, to "Toto" after the dog became famous in "The Wizard of Oz" (making $125/week). (Probably the dog was named after the "terrier" breed).
TOTO WAS IN 13 MOVIES BETWEEN 1939 AND 1942 (THIS IS A PARTIAL LIST):
1. George Washington Slept Here (1942)
2. Twin Beds (1942)
3. Calling Philo Vance (1940)
4. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
5. Bad Little Angel (1939)
6. Barefoot Boy (1938)
7. Buccaneer (1938)
8. Fury (1936)
9. Dark Angel (1935)
10. Bright Eyes (with Shirley Temple) (1934)
11. Ready for Love (1934)'
WHERE IS TOTO BURIED?:
1. Some say that Toto was buried in the Los Angeles back yard (now under the Ventura Freeway) of her trainer, Carl Spitz. Apparently Toto was not buried in the back yard of Spitz, but Carl was so upset about Toto dying that he buried the biography of Toto in his back yard. So, it was the biography, not the dog, that was buried there. During the construction of the Ventura Freeway (San Fernando Valley, California), William Carroll found the biography and published it (it was called "I, Toto." By the way, Carl Spitz died in 1976.
2. Some say that Toto was buried in North Carolina, in a marked grave with Toto's name, next to the grave of trainer Spitz.
3. The Guiness Book of World Records wrote that Toto was stuffed and auctioned in 1996 for $3,680.
